Catholic Prayer at the Ablution: A Catholic Mass Prayer
Cathoic Prayer at the Ablution
Thou, Lord, who once vouchsafedst to wash Thy disciples’ feet,
before their invitation to Thy holy table,
wash us also, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and wash us again:
not only our feet and hands,
but our hearts, our desires, our souls,
that we may be wholly innocent and pure.
Receive, O Holy Trinity,
this oblation we make Thee
in memory of the passion, resurrection, and ascension
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and in honor of the ever blessed Mary, ever Virgin;
of blessed John the Baptist;
of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul;
of these, and of all the saints;
that it may be available to their honor and our salvation.
And may they vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven,
whose memory we celebrate on earth.
Through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Ablution is a word that means washing or cleansing. This Catholic Prayer at the Ablution is a prayer we can pray silently during the Catholic Mass while the priest washes his hands. As the priest asks for God’s washing of his sins and iniquities, we in the congregation can ask for God to wash us, too, as Jesus washed the disciples at the Last supper. This prayer is such a great reminder to turn to God for cleansing and healing, not just in the Sacrament of Confession, but each day of our lives, especially during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For further information on the liturgical use of water, see New Advent’s post.
