O Salutaris Hostia is a prayer for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
O Salutaris Hostia, English translation
O saving Victim, opening wide,
The gate of heaven to man below!
Our foes press on from every side;
Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.
To Thy great name be endless praise,
Immortal Godhead, One in Three;
O, grant us endless length of days,
In our true native land with Thee.
Amen.
O Salutaris Hostia, Latin
O Salutaris Hostia,
Quae caeli pandis ostium:
Bella premunt hostilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium.
Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiterna gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria.
Amen.
O Salutaris Hostia was written by St. Thomas Aquinas. It is actually the last two verses of his longer work, Verbum Supernum Prodiens. As we pray to God in Adoration, we recognize the divinity of Christ and beg His help, so that we may live our lives well and therefore be with Him eternally in Heaven. As we chant the beautiful lyrics or use them in song, we can focus our hearts on God and His great love for us. You can find some more information about O Salutaris Hostia at OurCatholicprayers.com.
