Lord, as I read Your word,
please help me to know, love,
and understand You better.
Help me to recognize how You want for me
to apply Your Word to my life.
Holy Spirit, may You enlighten my mind
and enkindle in my heart
a greater love for You and for others
in my family and in the world
as I read Your Word.

This simple Prayer Before Reading the Bible is one that is easy to pray. The Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God, so it is good to ask the Holy Spirit to be with us as we read and pray the Scriptures. As Catholics, we read three to four Scriptures during each Mass. We pray before they are proclaimed and hear a homily (teaching) about them and how we can apply God’s Word to our lives. It is good to pray before reading the Bible when we read it by ourselves or with others in a Bible study. We want to know and understand God’s Word and how to apply it to our lives; therefore, we can ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us as we read and study His Word.
