Psalm 110
Psalm 110: The Messiah: King, Priest, and Conqueror
1 A psalm of David.
The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The scepter of your power the Lord will stretch forth from Zion: “Rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Yours is princely power in the day of your birth, in holy splendor; before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you.”
4 The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will do judgment on the nations, heaping up corpses; he will crush heads over the wide earth.
7 From the brook by the wayside he will drink; therefore will he lift up his head.
Psalm 110 is a messianic psalm that speaks of the priesthood of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Jesus is a priest forever. He is a king. He receives His power and authority from God. The message of this Psalm is also one of the perpetual priesthood in the Catholic Church. All priests are priests forever, sealed by the Lord in the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Meaning, also, that all priests are given authority by God to fulfill faithfully their duties as priests. The Bible verses of Psalm 110 give us a taste of the power of God and His eternal life.
