The greatest commandment is love.
One of the scribes, when he came forward and heard them disputing and saw how well he had answered them, asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12: 28-31
In this Gospel passage from Mark, love is the Greatest Commandment Jesus gives us. 1-Love Him above all else. 2-Love our neighbor as ourselves. Of course, this is not always easy. It can be challenging to love God above ourselves, to love our neighbor at times (or love some of our neighbors), or even to love ourselves with a true love. Yet, this is Jesus’ commandment to us, so we know He will help us to fulfill it and live it out if we truly try our best and ask Him for His help.
