God Gives Us Free Will
Why Does God Give Us Free Will?
Have you ever asked, why does God give us free will? He could have created us in any way and He chose to create us with free will. Our free will allows us to love or hate, to do good, bad, or mediocre in our lives.
Basically, our free will gives us the ability to choose how we want to be and what we want to think, believe, and do. With our free will, we have choices. One choice is: we can love God or not.
God loves us.
God loves us. The Bible writings and testimonies of miracles throughout the world over the last two thousand years show us this. God loves us, His people.
God created us out of love and He gave us the ability to freely love in return. Love that is not freely given is not true love.
God’s love for us is true. He gives us free will so we can have the freedom to choose to truly love Him back (or not).

We are not robots.
God did not create robots when He created us. A robot will do what it is programmed to do. We are not programmed to love Him and obey His commandments. Yes, God’s law is written on our hearts, but we are free to follow God’s law or not follow it. We are free to love God and others or not to love. We have free will given to us by God so we can freely choose Him or not.
We have the choice to freely choose God.
As parents, do we want our children to love us because they are “supposed to” love us, or do we want them to love us because they choose to love us? So it is with God. He loves us and sacrificed Himself for us; He does not want our love unless we freely give it to Him. God gives us free will so we can freely love Him, not love Him because we are obligated to love Him.
We have the choice to freely choose God.

We have freedom in Christ.
Christ’s passion and His sacrifice on the cross were for our sins. With His sacrifice, our sins are now atoned for. They are paid for. We are now free from the punishment of death because of our sins. Jesus gives us His body and blood in Holy Communion so He can be with us physically. Jesus’ sacrifice for us and His presence in the Holy Eucharist help us to be free to love with the love of God.
The post Freedom in Christ talks more about this as well.
True Freedom in Christ
Here is a great video by Fr. Mark-Mary Ames about what true freedom looks like.
God Gives Us Free Will
God gives us free will so we can freely love Him and freely love others. May we use this gift of free will to live our lives in true freedom. Amen.
