The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
“But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:
a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A spirit of counsel and of strength,
a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord,
and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.”
Isaiah 11: 1-3a
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are found in Isaiah 11: 2-3a. It may seem interesting to find the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, yet makes sense. Here Isaiah is foretelling of the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and what He will be like; He will be filled with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
In this passage the Gifts are called wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and of fear of the Lord. In the Catechism the Gifts are called wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and of fear of the Lord.
We are filled with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Baptism and these Gifts are strengthened in us when we are Confirmed. May we recognize the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives and work with God’s grace to cultivate and strengthen them in us.
