Jeremiah 1: 4-8: The Call of Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1: 4-8: The call of Jeremiah: be faithful to God’s call
4 The word of the Lord came to me thus:
3 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I dedicated you,
a prophet to the nations I appointed you.
6 “Ah, Lord God!” I said.
“I know not how to speak; I am too young.”
7 But the Lord answered me,
Say not, “I am too young.”
To whomever I send you, you shall go;
whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8 Have no fear before them,
because I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.
God’s words to Jeremiah are quite clear. He has work for Jeremiah to accomplish. He also tells Jeremiah to not fear because He will be with him.
The call of Jeremiah is like our call, too. God “formed (us) in the womb” and knows us. He dedicated us to do the work He calls us to do. Through prayer, an open heart, and listening ears, we can hear God tell us what work He has for us. We need not fear; God will be with us at every moment as we work, guiding, helping, and protecting us. Just as Jeremiah did, we, too, can say “yes” to God and answer His call in our lives.
