What can you do on a family fun day?

Fun Family Activities at Home
It is fun to go out, but it can also be nice to stay in and have time as a family for fun activities.
You can read, play, create, and have adventures. The possibilities are endless!
Read.
You can read to your kids, read together (take turns reading the pages of a book), or listen to an audiobook together.
The fun thing about reading is that you can do it anywhere. You can read sitting on the couch, laying on the floor, inside a fort made of blankets and furniture, or in the backyard.
It does not matter where you read, just that you read to your kids. It also does not matter how old they are. You can still read to them. I still read aloud to my high school kids.
You and your kids may have fun taking turns selecting books to read. You can check out books from your local library if you have read (many times over) all of the ones you already have at home and you want to try something new.
If you are stumped about where to start in selecting good books, you can ask your local librarian for ideas, look at lists of award-winning books, or check out Sarah Mackenzie’s website Read Aloud Revival for book lists and inspiration about reading aloud with your kids.
There are many resources available to you. Just jump in and start reading.

Play.
My Dad used to say, “The work of children is play.” I like that. It makes a lot of sense. Playing is how kids learn and try new things.
Kids are so creative; they use their imagination to create different games to play. Even games people think of for young kids can be enjoyed by older kids, like duck, duck goose, hot potato, or Simon Says. Bean bag toss and bowling pins are also fun. When everyone is playing (even the parents) they can be a lot of fun.
It is also fun to play board and card games as well. Two of our favorite family games are Rummikub and Blank Slate. When younger kids may not be able to play by themselves, they can pair up with a parent or older child and play as a team.
You can set up different game centers where one to three kids can play at a time. The kids can rotate through the different centers. At one center you can have board games set up like tic-tac-toe, Connect Four, Rubick’s Race, or a deck of cards.
Your kids may want to plan their own games to play as well.
Create.
Create what? Well, anything that you can think of!
You can create stories together. One person begins the story and then everyone else takes turns adding to the story. Warning: this can lead to a LOT of laughter and silliness.
You can build a fort out of furniture and blankets, build models, build with blocks, or craft sticks. Build things big or small.
When kids build, they use their creative imaginations to envision an idea and then work to see it come to life. They learn from their mistakes and try again.
Yes, sometimes there are tears, but they are working to create something and learning as they go along.
Have adventures.
Yes, you can have adventures at home. Some ideas: a scavenger hunt, cooking a new recipe together, or pulling out a map or globe and looking up places around the world to learn about or create a route to get to.
Don’t limit your imagination.
Enjoy many fun family activities at home.
Having fun as a family at home makes life more enjoyable and does not need to break the bank. Time together is the best of all because you are fostering family closeness and connections. These bonds can last a long time and bring back fond memories.
