Praying for My Family
The responsibility of praying for our family is one God gives us as wives and mothers. We can pray for our family in a variety of ways.
It is good to try different prayers and ways to pray and find what you like best. You may like one type of prayer for a while (like the Divine Mercy Chaplet) and then change to another type of prayer (like the Our Father or praying in your own words from your heart). It is up to you. The types of prayers you pray are less important than the act of praying for your family.
Pray different types of prayers.
You can pray for each individual member of our family in many different ways.
- Pray for each family member on a specific day of the week. For example, you might pray for your husband on Sunday, yourself on Monday, your oldest child on Tuesday, your second child on Wednesday, etc. Or, pray for more than one child each day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon, for example.
- Bless your children each night before bed by making the sign of the cross on their foreheads as you ask God for His guidance and protection upon them. Our kids can bless us this way, too!
- Pray for your family members as you fold an item of their clothing or wash a plate they used.
- Pray for your kids as you help them clean up a mess.
- Pray for your kids as you drive with them in the car.
- Pray a Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet for your family and dedicate each decade or each individual prayer to a particular person in your family.

Using prayer books to pray together as a family can be helpful. Prayer books are a great resource. They will give you new ideas and new prayers to pray. You can find prayers based on the liturgical season, the season of the year, or an event such as the birth of a new baby, a birthday, or a sacrament.
Here are some prayer book ideas you may find helpful:
Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Catholic Family Prayers from Paraclete Press.
The Catholic Family Book of Prayers: A Treasury of Prayers and Meditations for Families to Pray Together by Jerry Windley-Daoust.

Pray for every member of your family.
Did you notice above that I mentioned praying for yourself? You are part of your family. Be sure to pray for yourself, too. As moms, we need prayers to raise our kids as god calls us to. Never forget that you are part of your family.
Praying for your family does not have to be hard.
When you do not know what to say to God, just tell Him that and ask Him to help you. “Lord, I don’t know what to say. Please help me.” The simplest prayers are from our hearts when we talk directly to God.
If you want more ideas on rote prayers you can pray, be sure to look at the Prayers section on the website. You can find it here: https://blessedcatholicmom.com/category/catholic-prayers/prayers/ There are MANY pages with many different prayers. Try different ones and see which ones stand out the most to you.
Also, never forget that God loves you so much. He wants to help you care for the family He entrusted to your care. He would not have given your children into your care if He did not think you were the right mom for them.
