We pray the Collect at the Catholic Mass to help turn our hearts to God.
Prayer at the Collect
Almighty and eternal God,
we humbly beseech Thee mercifully to give ear
to the prayers of Thy servant,
which he offers Thee in the name of Thy Church,
and in behalf of us Thy people,
accept them to the honor of Thy name,
and good of our souls;
and grant us all those blessings
which may any way contribute to our salvation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
The Prayer at the Collect is an opportunity for us to collect our minds and hearts and then focus them on God. The Collect comes at the end of the Introductory Rite at Mass, after we pray Glory to God in the Highest. Just before the priest prays the Collect, he says, “Let us pray.” The Collect may not be the same at each Mass. It may be different depending on where we are in the liturgical year. This Prayer at the Collect is one you can pray quietly during Mass.
Catholic Culture’s website has a definition explaining this prayer. If you are interested in learning more about the order of the Mass, the USCCB has an outline of the order of the Mass.
