Psalm 95: A Call to Praise and Obedience
Psalm 95: A Call to Praise and Obedience
1 Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us greet him with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great king above all gods;
4 In his hands are the depths of the earth,
and the tops of the mountains are his.
5 His is the sea, for he has made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the Lord who made us.
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
8 “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day if Massah in the desert,
9 Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works.
10 Forty years I loathed that generation,
and I said: They are a people of erring heart,
and they know not my ways.
11 Therefore I swore in my anger:
They shall not enter into my rest.”
Psalm 95 is a great study in how to show God our faith in Him-what to do and what not to do. What we should do is “sing joyfully to the Lord,” “greet him with thanksgiving,” “bow down in worship,” and “kneel before the Lord who made us.” What we should not do is: “harden not your hearts,” test God, or have erring hearts. The psalm also tells us why we are called to worship God: He is “a great king” who made all the earth, and who “made us.” If you like Bible journaling, this is a great scripture to reflect on more deeply in your journal.
This translation of Psalm 95 is from the Catholic New American Bible.
In the video below, Fr. John Muir talks about how to start your day with Psalm 95. It is a wonderful commentary on the psalm.
